Flower and Garden
Club
The May meeting of the Breckland Flower and Garden Club at the Village Hall
was well attended to watch Christine Hewson demonstrate 'Upstairs - Downstairs'.
Dressed in mob cap and pinny, Christine took her audience through a Victorian
house. From the drawing room fireplace - using red carnations, orange lilies
and yellow kerria japonica, to the laundry - a frothy exhibit of white Solomon's
seal, white carnations and gypsophola placed in an old wash tub complete
with scrubbing board. Then from the butler's pantry - using silver foliage,
dark purple lilac, blue delphiniums and white chrysanthemums placed on a
Victorian cutlery box - to the parlour for afternoon tea set on a three-tiered
cake stand pink and white flowers complementing the pink and white crockery.
The dining room was dressed with a delicate tiered arrangement using ferns,
spray carnations and freesias. And in the bedroom an elegant wash bowl and
ewer was used for the final design which included white roses, white stocks,
alstromeiria and gypsophola. A busy day for our 'Victorian maid' (although,
in fact, it would probably have been the gardener who cut and arranged the
flowers for the house in Victorian times).
Ursula Jackson and Melissa Sheldake gained equal points in the New Hands
class, and Pat Barton won the Old Hands class in the monthly competition.
The next meeting will be an “Afternoon tea” at the home of Joy
Tunmore, Roseville, Mile Road, Carleton Rode on Thursday 8 June from 2pm
to 4pm. Please bring plants for sale and be prepared for a quiz!
