SOCIAL
AND WINE CIRCLE
Truckers to the rescue
With the intended speaker stranded in a small boat on the other side of the
English Channel, the Social and Wine Circle needed someone to talk to their
May meeting. Mike Read stepped in at short notice and enthralled the members
with his descriptions of the good works carried out by the local East Coast
Truckers charity.
What started as a group fighting to legalise the use of CB radio and taking
out a few children from a local special needs school in their trucks has now
become a charity famous for its Children’s Convoy from Norwich to Great
Yarmouth and back each year on August Bank Holiday Sunday. A video of this event
was shown and illustrated what a huge logistical exercise it is to organise
but the enjoyment of the children makes it all worthwhile.
The East Coast Truckers provide other events for needy children throughout the
year including a Christmas party and a visit to a pantomime. Support for individual
families, schools and hospices is also arranged when finances permit.
Barbara Miller telling the “Story of Norwich”? will be the speaker
at the next meeting in the Old Buckenham Church Rooms at 7.45pm on Thursday
8 June. All are welcome to come along.
